Stone patio with curved retaining wall, outdoor table and chairs, trees, and landscaped garden

Gardendale sits in north Jefferson County, just up I-65 and US-31 from Birmingham, and it grew from a small settlement once nicknamed Jugtown into the largest city in North Jefferson County. The land here rolls and rises toward the southwestern end of an Appalachian ridgeline, so the terrain runs from gentle, wooded family lots to steeper, rocky ground with deep ravines on the east and north sides. Streams thread through the area toward the Locust Fork of the Black Warrior River, and Black Creek Park sits just outside town. From Mount Olive to Fieldstown, that mix of slope, trees, and grade shapes how we lay out a deck or patio on your property.

Gardendale has a humid subtropical climate, which means long, hot, muggy summers and short, wet winters. The area collects roughly 55 inches of rain in a normal year, well above the national average, and summer humidity hangs heavy for weeks at a time. Spring and fall bring their own downpours, so good grading matters all year. All that water has to go somewhere, so we build with drainage in mind: proper footings, correct slope, and grading that carries runoff away from your home. We favor materials that shrug off moisture and heat, like composite decking and sealed masonry, so your outdoor space holds up season after season.

Local Experience

As a locally owned contractor, we know Gardendale homes, neighborhoods, and weather inside and out.

Built for 55 Inches of Rain

Gardendale sees roughly 55 inches of rain a year, well above the national average, plus long stretches of summer humidity. We build with proper drainage, correct slope, and moisture-tough materials so your deck or patio sheds water and does not rot, warp, or heave over time.

Sized for Sloped Lots

Much of Gardendale rolls across wooded hills near the end of an Appalachian ridgeline, and the east side turns rocky with deep ravines. We read your grade first, then engineer footings, walls, and framing to fit your exact lot instead of forcing a flat-lot design onto sloped ground.

We Know Gardendale Permits

A residential deck in Gardendale needs a building permit through the City's Inspection Services office on Main Street, with extra review for attached or elevated decks. We handle that paperwork, confirm the current rules for your property, and build to code so your project passes inspection without surprises.

OUR OUTDOOR PROJECTS

Every backyard in this gallery started as a plan drawn for one Gardendale family and one specific lot. As you scroll, notice how we work with slope, shade, and existing trees instead of against them. Picture your own yard here, then reach out to talk through what would fit your home and your family.

Project Spotlight: A Backyard Retreat in Mount Olive

Out in Mount Olive, where lots run larger and the tree cover is thick, we reimagined a sloped backyard as a true outdoor retreat. The build stepped a multi-level deck down the grade, added a covered pavilion for rainy-day cookouts, and used a low seating wall to carve flat, usable space out of the hill. Composite decking and sealed stonework keep upkeep low through Alabama's wet summers. The result gives the family room to gather, grill, and relax without leaving home, all framed by the wooded setting that drew them to Mount Olive.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT GARDENDALE OUTDOOR LIVING

Homeowners throughout the Gardendale area often have questions about where we work, what services we offer, and how to get started. Below are a few helpful answers about Cahaba Outdoor’s service area and outdoor living solutions.

  • Do I need a permit to build a deck in Gardendale?

Yes. Gardendale requires a building permit for a residential deck, handled through the City's Inspection Services office on Main Street, with extra review for attached or elevated decks. As your design-build contractor, we pull the permits and confirm the current rules for your lot.

  • What outdoor-living services do you offer?

We handle eight: custom decks, patios, pergolas, pavilions, hardscapes and masonry, outdoor fireplaces and fire pits, outdoor kitchens, and residential fence. Because one team designs and builds it all, the pieces of your backyard work together as a single, connected space.

  • Which Gardendale areas do you serve?

We build across Gardendale and North Jefferson County, from Mount Olive and Fieldstown to Wood Brook, Turnberry Ridge, and the neighborhoods along US-31. If you are near Gardendale and want a better outdoor space, reach out and we will come take a look.

  • What decking materials hold up best in Alabama's climate?

For Gardendale's heat, humidity, and heavy rain, we often recommend composite decking and sealed masonry. They resist moisture, rot, and warping far better than untreated wood, so your space stays solid and good-looking with much less upkeep over the years.

  • What does design-build mean for my project?

It means one company handles design, permitting, and construction from start to finish. You get a single point of contact, a plan tailored to your lot, and no finger-pointing between a separate designer and builder. It keeps your project smoother and on track.
